Power For Lifting In Electric, Chain And Wire Rope Hoists
This is the first of a 3-Blog series focusing on power for lifting in electric, chain and/ or wire rope hoists. To start, here is a list of some common components for your hoist. The Electrical Motor – The electric motor is usually wound in two speeds and converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. It works by using an interaction between magnetic field and wire windings to generate force in the form of torque applied on the motor’s shaft. The Brake – This is the device that keeps you safe by holding the load stationary. The brake is applied to the motor shaft which holds the load from falling. The brake is highly mechanized with springs and coils to do the job properly. The Gearbox – This changes the high speed of the electric motor (say 1,750 rpm) to a lower speed (say 350 rpm) (this is 5:1) and higher torque required for lifting. The Contactors – When the operator pushes the buttons for a given direction, these devices apply the proper electrical current path to the direction required. They also release the brake. The Transformer – This supplies the lower voltage to the control circuit. More on that in Blog#3. The Limit Switch – This is a safety device. This prevents the ingesting of the load block into the body of the hoist. It prevents snapping the chain. More on this to come as well. The Pendant – The handheld device where the operator selects the direction in which the hoist will move. Up/Down, East/West, and North/South directions can be your options. The E-stop – The emergency stop or “E-Stop” is a safety device that cuts power to all functions for the safety of the operator in the unlikely event that a mechanical, electrical or lifting safety incident occur.
