There Is A Lot To Know About Wire Rope
There is a lot to know about wire rope – or cable as many people call it.
In the lifting business wire rope is a critical component and at Crane Tech we change out a lot of cable.
I will discuss the many types of wire rope, including left-hand lay, right-hand lay, and non-rotating. The different lays are usually dependent on the wind of the drum. They have a larger D over D ratio (pulleys can be smaller – an advantage for space in reeling).
The non rotating has a higher D/d ratio. It doesn’t flex as much. If comparing size on size, it is generally around 90 percent of the strength.
Non rotating wire rope – or rotation resistant – is used on mobile cranes a lot. This permits them to lift on a single part line much better because the cable remains weaved properly and does not unspool.
For machines in multi part line or load blocks it often will not make a large difference. It may come down to preference.
You may have one broken wire in a strand every 12 inches, but the wire rope must be replaced immediately.
