Equipment Prep For The Winter Season

There are several things that can be done to prepare your equipment for the coming winter season. First for on highway crane trucks or equipment that travels to service customers, the obvious one is to oil the underside of the vehicle. This is extremely important. Our experience is that when the crane turns 7 years old that is when things start to happen. Well oiled trucks have a chance to go further if the good habit of oiling the underside has been respected. after that is to lubricate the cable. We use and sell a product called nyrosten – a wire rope lubricant that is fluid enough to penetrate the cable and yet thick enough to stick to the cable. Next is to lubricate the sliding sections of the extending booms. We use and sell a product called lube a boom. It has teflon in it so it slides the best. This provides anti rust properties as well as great lubricity. After that is greasing the pins. This is your once every 3 months time to get all of the pins. Lubricate every nipple. Lastly is your slewing gear box. Make sure that the 80W-90 gear oil is filled to the recommended levels. Additives such as liqui moly can improve performance (reduce noise – improve performance). The little things can help during cold times – they can save you snapping a piece of steel – gear – shaft etc. Spray all control valves with my favorite product – Krown KP 53 it will provide anti rust properties and will lubricate sticky valves – preventing them from breaking during cold snaps. Warm up hydraulics by testing them at lower speeds and flow rates until warmed up. Be gentle on all mechanical and hydraulics until components are warm enough. Prevent any breakage.
