Is The Use Of Open Hooks Legal?

Someone recently asked me if the use of open hooks is legal. The fast answer is no. But it is a discussion.
Open hooks must not be used in situations where there is a risk of the rigging coming loose.
For Construction purposes, the the answer is no.
If you are rigging for industrial processes, then 95% it’s a no.
When it comes to rigging different weldments each time and rotating weldments then the answer is no.
There are about 5% of industrial processes that are actually safer with the use of open hooks.
There are many types of open hooks.
Foundry hooks, open j hooks, large opening hooks are some of the types.
In high-heat processes like foundries, foundry hooks enable workers to safely release products without risking burns. A safer process. In order for this to work, the sling angles can be a factor. When conducting single-point lifting on smaller parts, ensure lifting points are carefully evaluated and perform a hazard assessment to ensure worker safety.
We have many customers who use j hooks to lift objects that have small slots or holes cut right into the product. This is a safe technique.
Grab hook style chains can be a good option – if you can choke around the object. Slack adjusters on chain sets can also help.
Crane tech can do a hazard assessment at your plant to address any concerns about the use of open hooks.
So many excellent rigging options are available, the need for open hooks can be avoided.
Reputable companies prioritize worker safety, actively conducting hazard assessments to evaluate whether an open hook is suitable for use in their processes.
We carry many of the more popular brands of hooks such as Crosby Vanguard Ben Mor Yoke – as well as the purpose-built parts such as Kito Budgit Vulcan CM.
