Do we pass or fail this cable on a 40 Ton Crane?
Do we pass or fail this cable on a 40 Ton Crane? It was a hard decision to make. But it was the right one. Sometimes when we do this work, we have to fail devices for safety. Our inspections are thorough. We get right to the point and we make sure that the work we do it safe for your team. During a recent inspection on a 40 Ton Crane, Andrew and Dave were on site with a customer in the Barrie, Ontario area. We were discussing if we would pass or fail a cable. Let’s talk about why. The wire had fractures but not breaks just as the rope guide was limiting out. This type of fracture would seem to indicate that a large side pull had occurred. The problem with this cable is that it was far too close to ingestion into the wire rope guide. The risk is high that the wire rope will break the rope guide. Because there were no breaks in the wires or strands, and the fracture was on the opposite side of the guide, it was a hard call. This is a 40 Ton Crane. Wire rope guides can be difficult to replace and are very expensive. It would be a good idea to replace this cable instead of having to replace both. At each inspection, Crane Tech generously lubricates this area because we realize how expensive these parts are. It’s challenging for us to fail this type of equipment, knowing on how important it is for our clients to be able to do business, we get it, but it’s always safety first for us.
